Panchayat leaders oppose project in Lekhi area

BORUM, Jan 29: PWD & UD Minister Nabam Tuki has consented to hold ‘proper discussions’ with officers of the UD and housing department to find a solution regarding ongoing urban project – construction of a truck and interstate bus terminus - being undertaken in Lekhi village.

The minister assured this in response to the representation submitted jointly by the ASMs and ZMP of 1 Borun Anchal segment Taro Modi opposing the establishment of truck and bus terminus and infringement of panchayat right by the department concerned with construction of urban project in panchayat jurisdiction.

The panchayat leaders expressed fear that besides pollution, the establishing of the inter-state bus terminus would also bring about demographic change, insecurity and displacement.

The PR leaders in its representation said that establishment of the terminus in the area would further pollute Lekhi which is already suffering from pollution from SMS factory which produces ‘ferra alloy, ferro manganese and calcium carbides’. Further, five high-frequency mobile towers and a ‘hot mix plant processing unit’ have also been set up in the same vicinity.

The representation said the panchayat leaders had also submitted a representation in December last urging the UD department to immediately stop the process, but, it said, the department failed to respond to their grievances.

Despite being land donors for the establishment of the state capital, the people of Borum are facing numerous problems including deprivation of rights and privileges in the capital’s developmental process in terms of supply and contract works in various departments, and they have also been deprived of employment even though the state government had notified that recruitment to C and D Grade jobs should be made in a 60:40 ratio, the representation said.

Even as the issue of demarcating urban and panchayat areas is on verge of completion, various government departments are infringing on the panchayat’s rights by setting up works without corresponding with the PR leaders, the panchayat leaders added.
